§ Mr. BlairTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what inquiries into the antecedents of Mr. T. Don Hutto were made before awarding the contract to manage Her Majesty's prison Blakenhurst to UKDS; in what way the present departmental inquiry into Mr. Hutto differs; and if the results of the inquiries will be made public.
§ Mr. Peter LloydResponsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.
Letter from Ian Dunbar to Mr. Tony Blair, dated April 1993:
In the temporary absence of Mr. Lewis, the Director General, from the office the Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about Mr. Hutto.
As is standard practice before awarding any prison managment contracts, a range of enquiries was made about the Corrections Corporation of America and to a limited extent about individuals within it; (those who are to be running a prision are subject to separate, more detailed checks). The purpose of the present inquiry is to look into specific allegations which have been made against Mr. Hutto and the conclusions of the exercise will be announced.
