Notes:

1. More than one offence may have been committed in some cases and the sentence of dismissal may have been given because of the more serious offence; or perhaps as a result of numerous convictions at a trial, i.e., a totaling effect.

2. Figures for 1992 are not expected to be available until mid-June. My noble Friend the Under-Secretary of state for defence will write to the hon. Member when the information is available.

Mr. Hutton

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many serving members of(a) the Royal Navy, (b) the RAF and (c) the Army were discharged from the services, having gone absent without leave, in each year since 1986.

Service Year
1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993
Royal Navy/Royal Marines 28 64 77 90 71 74 76 14
Army 1,962 1,997 2,190 2,477 2,999 2,808 2,650 597
Royal Air Force 236 219 154 190 155 131 103 29

1. The figures show the number of reported cases of absence without leave, which are not necessarily the same as the number of individuals who have gone absent without leave as some individuals may have gone absent more than once.

2. Figures for the Royal Navy/Royal Marines and Army show cases of personnel reported as absent for a period of seven days or more and for whom warrants for arrest have been issued.

3. Figures for the Royal Air Force show cases of personnel reported as absent for one day or more and may include instances where warrants for arrest have not yet been issued.

4. Figures for 1993 cover the period 1 January 1993 to 1 April 1993.
