Mr. Pendry

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what assessment his Department had made of the total number of anglers in Great Britain.

Mr. Brooke

[holding answer 27 April 1993]: The 1990 general household survey found that 6 per cent. of those surveyed in Great Britain, aged 16 or over, participated in angling in the 12 months before interview. This suggests that there are about 2,670,000 anglers.
