HL Deb 28 April 1993 vol 545 c16WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they intend to follow the example of France in contributing to Japan's stockpile of weapons-grade plutonium.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Baroness Denton of Wakefield)

France, Japan and the United Kingdom are all parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and are fully committed to its principles. Accordingly, since Japan is a non-nuclear weapon state, the Japanese government does not seek plutonium for weapons purposes, nor would the French or British Governments permit such exports to be made to them.
