HL Deb 27 April 1993 vol 545 c9WA
Lord Harris of Greenwich

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What will be the size of the new police authorities proposed by the Home Secretary, what proportion will be locally elected representatives, magistrates and persons appointed by ministers, and whether the chairmen will be found from their number.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

The size of the new police authorities has not yet been decided, although they will be smaller than most present authorities. It is proposed that half the members will be local councillors and the other half will be made up of local people, who will be appointed by my right honourable friend, and magistrates. The chairman will be drawn from the overrall membership.
