To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the tonnage of goods and materials transported by rail in each year since 1979; and if he will make a statement.

This information is contained in "Transport Statistics", Great Britain, 1992, tables 9.3 and 1.9 and in British Rail's annual reports and accounts for the years in question, copies of which are in the Library.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will bring forward legislation to enable him to control British Rail charges to freight customers.

No. Charges are set by negotiation with customers in the light of market pressures.
