HC Deb 26 April 1993 vol 223 cc318-9W
Mr. Alan W. Williams

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his Department's plans for the long-term storage of high-level radioactive waste.

Mr. Maclean

Government policy is that high-level radioactive waste is treated and stored at the surface for a period of at least 50 years, which will allow heat generated by the decay of radioactivity to reduce.
