§ 15. Mr. ThomasonTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what plans he has to promote a debate on the balance between selective and universal benefits.
§ Mr. LilleyI am always keen to encourage public debate on social security issues. I would particularly welcome any interesting ideas which could inform the ongoing review of the social security system.
§ 21. Mr. EnrightTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what benefits are currently under review; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. ScottIn the course of the long-term expenditure review, we shall be examining all aspects of the social security programme. No decisions have been taken yet; there would be no point in conducting a long-term review if we already knew the outcome. It is our policy, at this stage of the review, to keep all options open.
