HC Deb 26 April 1993 vol 223 c309W
15. Mr. Thomason

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what plans he has to promote a debate on the balance between selective and universal benefits.

Mr. Lilley

I am always keen to encourage public debate on social security issues. I would particularly welcome any interesting ideas which could inform the ongoing review of the social security system.

21. Mr. Enright

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what benefits are currently under review; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Scott

In the course of the long-term expenditure review, we shall be examining all aspects of the social security programme. No decisions have been taken yet; there would be no point in conducting a long-term review if we already knew the outcome. It is our policy, at this stage of the review, to keep all options open.
