137WLetter from Michael Bichard to Ms Helen Jackson, dated 20 April 1993:
As Chief Executive of the Benefits Agency it is my responsibility to answer questions about relevant operational matters. I am therefore replying to your recent Parliamentary Question to the Secretary of State for Social Security asking when forms for claims for occupational health benefits for miners in respect of emphysema and bronchitis will be available in all DHSS and benefits agency offices. As announced in the House of Commons on 29 March, the Government propose to extend the list of prescribed diseases to include chronic bronchitis and emphysema in relation to underground coal miners. This change is intended to take effect from 13 September 1993. Claims can be made for disablement under the industrial injuries scheme at any time, but claims for these diseases made before the change takes effect will not be successful District Offices will have full instructions and claim forms will be available in good time for the start date.I hope you find this reply helpful. A copy will appear in the Official Report and a copy will also appear in the Library.
