To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what guidance has been given on the treatment of private water supplies.

§ Mr. Maclean
A manual on the treatment of private water supplies is being published today by HMSO. I have arranged for copies to be placed in the Library.
It has been produced by the Water Research Centre under a contract steered by the drinking water inspectorate and gives guidance on assessing the suitability of small scale treatment processes.
