To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the private firms involved in tendering for the prison education service.

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply that I gave to the hon. Member for Sherwood (Mr. Tipping) on 14 January at col.798. Responsibility for this matter has now been delegated to the director general of the prison service. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Mr. D. Lewis to Harry Greenway, dated 16 April 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question about firms tendering for the Prison Education Service. Mr. Lloyd announced on 11 February the award of the contracts for 68 prisons and young offender institutions. A list of those to whom contracts have been awarded is enclosed. Contracts for 57 prison establishments have still to be awarded.
