Mr. Mallon

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what funding has been made available for(a) teaching, (b) research and (c) other activities in Queen's university, Belfast and the New University of Ulster in the years 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992, respectively;

(2) what is the total quantity of Government funding made available for Queen's university, Belfast and the New University of Ulster in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992.

Notes:

1. Departmental funding is not held on calendar year basis and tables give amounts in financial years.

2. Prior to the 1992–93 financial year, Departmental records do not identify funding for teaching and research separately.

3. Amounts exclude tuition fees paid under the Northern Ireland Students' Awards Regulations.

4. The reduction in teaching and research funding between 1990–91 and 1991–92 is accounted for by the shift in funding from these areas to cover increases in tuition fees.
