HC Deb 14 April 1993 vol 222 c623W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if local authorities are being encouraged to apply for safer city project funding.

Mr. Jack

In areas which have safer cities projects, local authorities may apply for grant support to assist with the implementation of local crime prevention initiatives. The safer cities progress report for 1991–92 shows that, since grant funding began in April 1989, £5.3 million out of a total of £16 million has been paid to local authorities for this purpose.

It is the Government's intention to expand the safer cities programme in line with my statement of 7 January. I am not yet in a position to provide further details of the arrangements for the next phase. However, I would expect local authorities to continue to benefit from safer cities grant funding.
