HC Deb 14 April 1993 vol 222 c587W
Mr. Norman Hogg

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he intends to extend the fishing exclusion zone to encompass areas where high levels of oil contamination have been found associated with sediment south of the current exclusion zone.

Sir Hector Monro

Detailed monitoring has been carried out by Government scientists since oil-contaminated sediments were first found to the south-east of Fair Isle. Results have shown that while sediments have been contaminated by Braer oil, hydrocarbon concentrations in the water column and in samples of fish from the vicinity have been within background levels. In these circumstances I see no need to extend the existing exclusion zone.
