Mr. Bayley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many psychogeriatric continuing care beds are funded by the NHS in the independent sector in each district health authority;

(2) if she will publish tables indicating the number of (a) geriatric and (b) psychogeriatric continuing care beds available (i) currently, (ii) in 1990, (iii) in 1985 and (iv) in 1980 in each district health authority; and if she will also provide figures of the number of beds per 1,000 of the population aged over 65 years in each district health authority at each of these dates.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is her Department's guidance to health authorities on the number of psychogeriatric continuing care beds per thousand population aged over 65 years; and if she will make a statement.

District health authorities, are responsible for assessing the needs of their residents and for securing a comprehensive range of services—including psychiatric services—to meet those needs within available resources.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what discussions she has had since 1989 with the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of Physicians on the number of psychogeriatric continuing care beds per thousand population aged over 65 years in each health authority area.
