HL Deb 01 April 1993 vol 544 c61WA
Lord Hutchinson of Lullington

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many new purpose-built prisons will have opened between 1979 and the end of the present building programme in 1994–95; and how many additional places will have been added to the system in: (a) new prisons, and (b) existing prisons where additional accommodation has been constructed.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

The new prison building programme announced in 1979 will provide 21 new prisons, with almost 11,300 places, by 1994–95. Over the same period, nearly 8,200 additional places will be provided at existing establishments.
