To ask the Secretary of State for Health what percentage of the total national health service salary bill was spent on salaries for doctors, nurses, midwives, nursing auxiliaries, pharmacists and administrators in 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1992.

No specific account was taken in the calculation of the social security transfer element of the special transitional grant. Data on the numbers likely to be affected are not available. Following a number of representations from hon. Members and other interested parties, my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Security is currently giving careful consideration to all the implications.
