HL Deb 01 April 1993 vol 544 c62WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they consider that the actions of the Economic States of West Africa Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) forces in Liberia are in keeping with the Geneva Conventions; what reports the UN Secretary-General has received from the special representative following his visit there and whether they will place copies in the Library; and what new initiatives are envisaged to limit conflict and bring about peace in Liberia.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We would expect all parties to the conflict in Liberia and all others concerned to respect strictly the provisions of international humanitarian law.

A copy of the UN Secretary-General's report, based on the findings of his special representative, will be placed in the Library together with the text of the Security Council Resolution (SCR) 813 subsequently adopted.

The UN Secretary-General's special representative will soon be returning to Liberia to explore with ECOWAS and the parties concerned how the UN can best support the implementation on the Yamoussoukro IV Accord. We will continue to support all efforts to bring peace to Liberia.
