HC Deb 01 April 1993 vol 222 c410W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what initiatives have been taken by the British Council to raise the profile of Wales abroad.

Mr. David Hunt

The British Council in Wales aims to promote an overseas awareness of the distinctive culture, resources and achievements of Wales. It co-ordinates educational missions and exhibitions overseas, for example in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Germany, to enhance an understanding of contemporary Wales and to publicise the quality of Welsh further and higher education and Welsh achievements in science and research. In May 1993, it is arranging in collaboration with British Council offices overseas and commercial sponsors—an art event "Wales Week at Stuttgart".

There are a number of other activities which the British Council undertakes which enable overseas specialists to visit Wales, and also to enable Welsh specialists to go to other countries to organise specialist courses.
