HC Deb 24 September 1992 vol 212 cc1-2W
Mr. Thomason

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how the cost of education provision has changed within inner London in comparison to those costs for outer London between the financial years preceding, including and succeeding the abolition of the Inner London education authority.

Mr. Forth

The latest year for which information on local education authorities' actual spending is available is 1989–90. That was the last year of the Inner London education authority. In the three years to 1989–90, London LEAs' net recurrent expenditure on education was as shown in the table.

LEAs' net recurrent expenditure1 on education
Year Inner London £ million 2Outer London £ million
1987–88 1,103 1,202
1988–89 1,086 1,417
1989–90 1,085 1,485
1 Net recurrent expenditure includes total expenditure other than capital financing costs, less income other than from specific Government grants. Information is taken from LEAs' returns to the Department of the Environment of their actual spending.
2 Excluding the following LEAs, which did not complete returns: 1987–88, Ealing and Haringey; 1988–89, Haringey; 1989–90, Haringey and Hounslow.
