§ Mr. Hinchliffe
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the loss in tax revenue, based on average income figures and direct taxation, resulting from unemployment in the financial years 1990–91 and 1991–92.

§ Mr. Dorrell
The loss in tax revenue would depend on the particular circumstances of the people concerned. It is not possible to provide a meaningful estimate.
