To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his most recent assessment of the economic and political situation in southern Africa.

Despite tragic setbacks, the countries of the region are still going through potentially a most hopeful period of political and economic change. This difficult process is worsened by the worst drought in living memory. However, we remain optimistic.
