HC Deb 28 October 1992 vol 212 cc732-3W
Mr. Hutton

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will publish a table showing the value in cash and percentage terms of the contributions of all NHS purchasing authorities towards the revenue costs of hospice services in 1991–92 and in the current financial year; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Sackville

[holding answer 27 October 1992]: Information is not available in the form requested. The table shows the amounts of central funds allocated to regional health authorities in 1991–92 and 1992–93 for the specific purpose of enabling purchasing authorities to increase their contributions to the revenue costs of hospices for adult patients run by voluntary organisations. Additional sums of £3.2 million in 1991–92 and £5.5 million in 1992–93 were allocated to regional health authorities as part of a trial scheme to enable hospices to obtain drugs for their in-patients free of charge.

Purchasing authorities also contribute to the revenue costs of hospices from their main allocations. For 1991–92, it is estimated that combined Department of Health and NHS funds met 41 per cent. of the revenue costs of adult hospices. We remain committed to reaching a position where the value of health authorities' contributions to hospices' agreed revenue costs matches that of voluntary giving.
