HC Deb 28 October 1992 vol 212 cc703-4W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list, for the last 12 months, the titles of papers published by the chief executive of the Cadw (Welsh Historic Monuments).

Sir Wyn Roberts

Responsibility for the subject of the question has been delegated to Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments under its chief executive, Mr. John Carr. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given. A copy of his reply will be placed in the Library of the House.

Letter from Mr. J. Carr to Mr. Martin Redmond, dated October 1992: The Secretary of State has asked me to reply to your recent PQ which asked if he would list for the last 12 months the titles of papers that I have published as Cadw's Chief Executive. The principal document published by me in this period has been Cadw's first Annual Report and Accounts for the years 1991–92. I attach a copy. A copy is also available in the Library of the House. In addition to its Annual Report the Agency has produced a wide variety of publications ranging from guidebooks in respect of monuments in the care of the Secretary of State to lists of buildings afforded statutory protection under the provisions of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. If you would like details of any of these I would be glad to provide this.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list for the last 12 months the fact-finding visits the chief executive of the Cadw (Welsh Historic Monuments) has made; what were his findings; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Wyn Roberts

Responsibility for the subject of the question had been delegated to Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments under its chief executive, Mr. John Carr. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given. A copy of his reply will be placed in the Library of the House.

Letter from Mr. J. Carr to Mr. Martin Redmond, dated October 1992: The Secretary of State has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question which asked if he would list for the last 12 months the fact finding visits that I have made and my findings. You will have seen that the Agency's first Annual Report which I have sent you sets out the mission statement of the Agency which is to protect, to conserve and to promote the built heritage of Wales. As part of my responsibilities as Agency Chief Executive I made a number of visits in Britain and occasionally overseas to help further promote these objectives. As the Annual Report highlight, a key responsibility I have as Chief Executive is to encourage greater numbers of visitors particularly from overseas to visit the monuments of outstanding international importance that are in Cadw's care. In December 1991 I made a visit to the United States, and participated in a workshop sponsored by the Council of Europe in Romania in September 1992. In the day to day conduct of my responsibilities I have not as such undertaken fact finding missions but as Chief Executive of the Agency since April 1991, and Director of Cadw prior to that, I have established close associations with other built heritage managers and with others involved in Britain's tourism industry.
