To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about the progress of the Trident programme.

Mr. Aitken

The Trident programme continues to progress to time and within budget towards its in-service date of the mid-1990s. The first Trident submarine, Vanguard, left Barrow-in-Furness for her contractor's sea trials on 23 October.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the latest estimate of the cost of Trident; and if he will make a statement.

The currently estimated cost of the Trident procurement programme is £10,518 million at 1991–92 prices and £1 = $1.59.
