HC Deb 27 October 1992 vol 212 c568W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make it his policy to call for a world-wide ban on the use of organochlorine pesticides.

Mr. Soames

Given the diverse range of crops, pests and climatic conditions it is for each country to decide whether pesticides best meet its particular pest control and environmental needs. The use of persistent organochlorine pesticides is already prohibited throughout the European Community. The United Kingdom also protects the third world countries from the importation of hazardous pesticides by participating in the United Nations Environment Programme/Food and Agriculture Organisation's prior informed consent scheme.
