To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many empty houses are currently owned by his Department.

As at 30 September 1992, the latest date for which figures are available, 9,388 MOD-owned dwellings were vacant of which 9,167 were service married quarters. The majority of the vacant properties were either undergoing or awaiting major modernisation work, or allocated to incoming service families. A total of 1,807 dwellings were in the process of being sold, and a number of others were being considered for disposal.
