HC Deb 26 October 1992 vol 212 c487W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will review the current safety arrangements for the air transport of plutonium following the El-Al cargo plane crash in Amsterdam.

Mr. Norris

The transport of radioactive materials is governed by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations. The standards are stringent. They require containers to remain secure after severe impact and severe fire.

The IAEA keeps its standards under review, and is undertaking a study of air transport aspects. Any resulting recommendations for changes to present regulations will be considered during the next major review of IAEA transport regulations.
