HC Deb 26 October 1992 vol 212 cc439-40W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list(a) the names and (b) the occupations of each lord lieutenant and deputy lord lieutenant currently in post; who is responsible for their nomination; and what (i) salary and (ii) honoraria, allowance or expenses each receives.

Mr. Mates

In Northern Ireland lord lieutenants are appointed by Her Majesty under article 2 of the Northern Ireland (Lieutenancy) Order 1975, on the advice of my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister.

Deputy lieutenants are nominated by the lord lieutenants and subject to Her Majesty's non-disapproval which is signified by the Secretary of State, are appointed under article 3 of the same order. There are currently some 147 deputy lieutenants. A list of their names is set out in the table. Details relating to the occupation of each are not known and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

Lord lieutenants and deputy lieutenants are unsalaried. Lord lieutenants—but not deputy lieutenants—may claim from central funds reimbursement of travel, postage, telephone calls and other non-entertainment expenses incurred in the course of their official duties.
