HC Deb 26 October 1992 vol 212 cc457-8W
Mr. Michael

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many times per annum meetings take place of the full committee of the Standing Conference on Crime Prevention; when the last meeting took place; and when he expects the next meeting will be called.

Mr. Jack

[holding answer 23 October 1992]: The last meeting of the Home Office Standing Conference on Crime Prevention took place on 18 December 1990. Previously the conference had taken place on an annual basis. A conference has not been planned for this year because, as part of our focused approach to crime prevention, the resources normally devoted to it have been channelled to support the national effort against car crime, through car crime prevention year and its national publicity campaign. Car crime currently accounts for nearly one-third of all recorded crime. Consideration is currently being given to future meetings of standing conference.

By the end of this year as part of our crime prevention strategy Home Office Ministers will have supported and contributed to many local and national crime prevention conferences and meetings including the car crime prevention year launch and review conferences, Crime Concern's conference on "Young People and Community Safety", a conference organised by Crime Concern and the Community Development Foundation entitled "Towards Safer Communities" and the national neighbourhood watch co-ordinators conference planned for November.
