To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimates he has made of the estimated cost to his budget of the recent announcement of job losses in the coal mining industry and their knock-on effects in other industries.

The characteristics of individual claims will vary widely and entitlement to benefit will be affected by redundancy and/or compensation payments. However, the effect on expenditure of a variation of 100,000 in the numbers of unemployed people is given in figure 25, page 18, of the second departmental report of the Department of Social Security, Cm 1914, published in February 1992, a copy of which is in the Library.
