HC Deb 21 October 1992 vol 212 cc312-3W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will undertake an analysis of the impact of clearing banks not speculating against the pound but merely dealing for customers with genuine international trading requirements.

Mr. Nelson

I have no plans to do so.

Mr. Allen

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps he is taking against British banks which speculated against the pound in the period 14 to 17 September; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nelson

It would not be appropriate to take any such steps. It is for banks and other financial institutions to make decisions about the deployment of funds within their control, subject to the framework of law within which they operate, including prudential regulations.
