To ask the right hon. Member for Selby, representing the Church Commissioners, if he will estimate what would be the additional revenue for the Church Commissioners if the current fees charged for marriage, funerals and baptisms were doubled.

Fees for marriages and funerals—they are not charged for baptisms—are paid to the officiating minister and the parochial church council, not to the commissioners.

Total fee income for the year to 31 March 1991 was about £13 million. An increase of 15 per cent. in most fees was implemented from 1 January 1992. It is difficult to know whether a doubling of the fees would result in a pro-rata increase—that is, to about £30 million—because there could be a slackening of demand.
