To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many inquiries have been made to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency by the police service to establish the name and address of the registered keeper of a motor vehicle leading to the detection of a hit-and-run driver.

The police normally obtain names and addresses of the present keepers of vehicles direct from the police national computer, PNC, which contains extracts from the central register maintained by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. During the past 12 months the police made some 47,000 enquiries of the agency for details of previous keepers not available from the PNC but it is not known how many, if any, of these related to detection of hit-and-run drivers.
