To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is her estimate of the total number of tobacco-related deaths in 1991–92.

It is estimated that in the United Kingdom about 110,000 deaths each year are smoking related.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is her estimate of the cost to the NHS of smoking-related diseases in 1990–91 and 1991–92.

Dr. Mawhinney

Treatment costs to the national health service are estimated to be £437 million annually. This figure is for hospital costs only and does not include the costs of the care given by GPs or at health clinics or other care in the community.
