HC Deb 19 October 1992 vol 212 c161W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what evaluation he has made of the prospects for the continued use of the Nevada test site by the United Kingdom for its nuclear testing programme, following the vote in the United States Senate to restrict the use of the test site and to halt all nuclear tests by September 1996.

Mr. Aitken

The hon. Member will know that the United States Congress has now enacted legislation imposing a moratorium on nuclear testing until July 1993, with a final end to testing in 1996. The legislation provides for continued use of the Nevada test site by the United Kingdom up to that date. The position after 1996 will depend upon whether any other country tests after that date.
