§ Mr. Austin Mitchell
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the proposed date for the start of the final stage of economic and monetary union agreed to in the Maastricht treaty; and what stage the United Kingdom has reached.

§ Mr. Nelson
The starting date for the third stage of economic and monetary union will be set in accordance with the provisions of article 109j of the treaty on European union. Along with all other member states, the United Kingdom is presently participating in the first stage which began on 1 July 1990.
