HC Deb 19 October 1992 vol 212 c236W
Ms. Janet Anderson

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what representations he has received concerning the import of cloth treated with pentachlorophenol into the United Kingdom.

Mr. Needham

We have received a number of letters calling for a ban on imports of pentachlorophenol-treated cloth and for a relaxation of effluent emission standards. We do not regard an import ban as practicable or consistent with the polluter-pays principle. Effluent emission standards are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment.
