HC Deb 19 October 1992 vol 212 c123W
15. Mr. Sweeney

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what measures are being taken to ensure that all Welsh beaches attain the highest standards of cleanliness.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

A major investment programme is in hand by Dwr Cymru to enable all waters in Wales identified under the EC Bathing Waters Directive to meet the directive's mandatory bacteriological standards.

In addition, the Government have introduced provisions in the Environmental Protection Act 1990 which place local authorities and others under a duty to keep beaches clear of litter and refuse.
