To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the amount of access funds allocated to each education and library board of each college of further education in Northern Ireland for(a)1990–91 and(b)1991–92; and what are the amounts paid out to date.

Mr. Hanley

Access funds were introduced at the start of the academic year 1990–91, with the sums allocated to each education and library board and the amounts disbursed by each board to students in colleges of further education being as follows:

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what plans he has to increase the amount of access funds available to students in Northern Ireland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hanley

The Department of Education for Northern Ireland, in making annual allocations for access funds available to students in Northern Ireland, follows the principle of parity with Great Britain. The amounts available for this purpose have been increased by 1.56 per cent. in 1992–93.
