Mr. Trotter

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will set out the Royal Navy refit and repair contracts undertaken by private yards in the latest year for which figures are available, the total costs of such contracts, and the proportion that expenditure represented of the expenditure on all Royal Navy refit and repair work, including work at the royal dockyards and the Fleet Maintenance and Repair Organisation at Portsmouth.

Mr. Aitken

During the financial year 1991–92, in excess of 400 contracts were placed. Following competition, for the refit and repair of RN, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service and other small vessels. Such contracts ranged from providing assistance to the RN in rectifying defects on operational vessels to the refitting of RFAs. The major contracts awarded are listed below.

The total value of these contracts is in the order of £85 million (1992–93 price levels). This excludes those contracts awarded overseas and represents 14.7 per cent. of the total expenditure on all RN, RFA and RMAS refit and repair work.
