To ask the Secretary of State for Education what percentage of secondary schools are grant maintained.

Mr. Forth

Ten per cent. of eligible secondary schools have decided in favour of grant-maintained status. Six per cent. are already operating, a further 1 per cent. are approved but not yet operating, and an additional 3 per cent. have published or are publishing proposals.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many schools have(a) held ballots on grant-maintained status and (b) opted for grant-maintained status; and of those schools which have voted for grant-maintained status what percentage of the parents who voted voted in favour.

To date, 726 ballots on grant maintained status have been held. Of these, 569 have resulted in a vote for grant maintained status. In those 569 cases, 77 per cent. overall of the parents who voted did so in favour of grant-maintained status.
