Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement outlining the work undertaken by his Department resulting from the United Kingdom acid waters review group report published in 1988.

Mr. Mclean

A number of the recommendations on the United Kingdom acid waters review group report have been implemented. These include the setting up and operation of the United Kingdom acid waters monitoring network; the appointment of a critical loads advisory group, acid waters sub-group under the chairmanship of Professor Battarbee, University college, London; the recent completion of a nationwide survey of lake and stream acidity; the development of freshwater chemistry and biological acidification models; and departmental sponsorship of research at a number of universities and research institutes throughout the United Kingdom.
