To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment which parts of Staffordshire currently fall within the west midlands intermediate area for assisted area status; how much grant was awarded to these areas for each of the last three years; how that money was spent; and how much assistance from EC funds was subsequently available.

[holding answer 20 November 1992]: Assisted area status applies to those parts of Staffordshire lying within the Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton and Dudley travel-to-work areas.

RAS grant is awarded to support capital investment projects which create or safeguard jobs and grant offered to the above areas over the last three years was as follows:

1990–91 991,500
1991–92 89,500
totalling £2,067,500 in all.

None of these awards has been assisted from EC funds.
