HC Deb 25 November 1992 vol 214 c683W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make it his policy to designate additional monitoring sites in(a) urban and (b) rural areas of Wales to assess levels of (i) sulphur dioxide and (ii) nitrogen oxides.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

In line with the commitment in the White Paper "This Common Inheritance" (Cm 1200) the Government recently extended the United Kingdom's urban air monitoring network. Among new urban stations opened was one in Cardiff which became operational in May 1992. More stations are planned and will monitor sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide as well as other pollutants.

There are no plans to extend rural monitoring from its present level which, on the basis of current expert advice, is considered adequate.

Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish figures for emissions of(a) sulphur dioxide, (b) black smoke, (c) nitrogen dioxide, (d) volatile organic compounds and (e) carbon monoxide in Wales, by sector and, where appropriate, by fuel type.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

Information on these emissions, by sector and fuel type, is available for the United Kingdom as a whole only. The latest published data is in the Digest of Environmental Protection and Water Statistics No. 14, copies of which are held in the Library of the House.
