Mr. Hain

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what were the October 1992 figures for male adult unemployment in the area covered by the valleys initiative programme(a) by district and (b) in total for each of the years 1979, 1988, 1991 and 1992, showing the percentage changes and also figures for the economically active percentage of the adult male population.

The existing programme for the Valleys Area covers all of the borough of Rhondda and part of 15 other districts. The earliest year for which data comparable with present coverage are available for local areas in 1983. The information requested is given in the following tables:

The 1981 census recorded all students as economically inactive whereas the 1991 census distinguishes between those economically active and inactive.
