HC Deb 24 November 1992 vol 214 c586W
Sir David Steel

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what funding he will provide for humanitarian aid to northern Iraq for the next six months.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

[holding answer 20 November 1992]: A new contribution of £2.6 million was announced in my reply to the hon. Member for Bradford, North (Mr. Rooney) on 26 October, at column 433. Of this, £2.5 million has been passed to the World Food Programme for the provision of food. This has already been bought in Turkey and WFP is now making arrangements for its transport and distribution within northern Iraq.

The remaining £100,000 is being used to augment our funding for non-governmental organisations in northern Iraq. This includes three projects with the Save the Children Fund for road maintenance, bridge erection and distribution of winter wheat seed, and a small programme of village reconstruction and development of community facilities through the Kurdish Reconstruction Organisation.
