To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what has been the incidence of bacterial contamination of water supplies in each of the last five years in each of the areas covered by the present water companies.

Information on drinking water quality in England and Wales during 1990 and 1991 is contained in the annual reports of the chief inspector, the drinking water inspectorate, copies of which have been placed in the Library.

Information on earlier years is not held centrally and could be collected only at disproportionate cost.
