HC Deb 23 November 1992 vol 214 cc526-7W
26. Ms. Hoey

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what measures he has taken to improve travel in London by river.

Mr. Norris

Since the Marchioness Disaster in 1989, my Department immediately accepted all the recommendations in the Marine Accident Investigation Branch's report into the loss of the Marchioness and took immediate action to implement them as quickly as possible. All but five of the 27 recommendations have been fully implemented and action on the outstanding recommendations should be completed by the end of the year. Action is now in hand on all 22 recommendations in the Hayes report of the inquiry into river safety.

For the future, I wish to explore further the potential for both passenger and freight traffic on the River Thames and I hope to make an announcement about this shortly.
