HC Deb 18 November 1992 vol 214 cc284-5W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Health on what basis annual remuneration for NHS chairmen and non-executive directors was calculated; and what is the minimum time each would be expected to contribute to their duties each month.

Dr. Mawhinney

The remuneration of health authority and trust chairmen is determined by the Secretary of State with the consent of the Treasury; the level of remuneration depends on a number of factors including the level of duties and responsibilities. Chairmen are expected to spend between two and a half and three and a half days per week on their duties, depending on the nature of the authority or trust. Non-executive members and directors are expected to spend two to three days per month on their duties.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what disciplinary action has been taken against(a) officers, (b) chairmen, (c) members and (d) non-executive directors in respect of the recent contractural problems in Wessex and the West Midlands regional health authorities.

Dr. Mawhinney

Disciplinary action taken against officers is a matter for the regional health authorities concerned. Formal disciplinary procedures are not appropriate for chairmen, members or non-executive directors as they are not NHS employees.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans there are to change the nature or extent of the current duties and responsibilities of(a) the Doncaster health authority and (b) the Doncaster family health services authority.

Dr. Mawhinney

This is a matter for Trent regional health authority. The hon. Member may wish to contact Sir Michael Carlisle, the chairman of the authority, for details.
